THREAD: Compassionate Case for Safe & Sensible Reopening of our Economy restrictions are loosening parts of US. there’s fear that it's too soon and doing so many people will die needlessly. If it means “even one life” then we should keep it shut down as long as necessary. 1/10
Except it’s not so simple. The UN sounded the alarm of global catastrophe. Not from Covid 19 but the cure. David Beasley from UN World Food Prgrm said 300,000 children will die from starvation every day over a 3 month period. 130M will be “pushed to the edge of starvation.” 2/10
That doesn’t begin to count the numbers who will die from being shut off from access to clean water and medical aid. (NYT April 21, 2020)

We’re left with a terrible choice. 3/10
1. Open economy risking lives of people dying from Covid19 here in US and around the world. numbers are hard to know. every single predictive model were wrong. based on % death rates that have proven way too high. even so, the number will be high. OR. 4/10
2. Keep economy shutdown & cost millions of lives here & around the world. From Covid & Non Covid. UN info is based on proven models. Flatten the curve was never meant to stop the virus. It can’t. It was meant to slow the virus and prevent hospitals from being overrun. 5/10
That means many people will still be sick, and many still will die. But it will be over a longer period of time.

Either choice puts the lives of vulnerable people at risk. Either choice feels impossible. Either choice is the reality of living in the Genesis 3 world. 6/10
Given the two choices, opening our economy back up in a safe and sensible way is the least risky. (with all the recommendations of CDC.. testing, etc) 7/10
We’ve learned much about safety, safe space, washing hands, face masks. that will help us to mitigate risks. We have capabilities for social distancing here in US without full stop shutting down everything. This is a luxury not available in refugee camps or slums. 8/10
I’m hopeful that we can step away from the oversimplified binary narrative that we are given by the media or politicians. I’m hopeful that by knowing the implications of our "cure", we might give each other a little more grace. 9/10
There are vulnerable populations in our own cities and around the world. Let’s speak up and fight for them while being compassionate and merciful to each other. we can rise above partisan divide & unite to defeat. without destroying the lives of millions of people. 10/10
