lets talk about how oikawa’s last toss in high school restated the two most significant sentences kageyama used to describe iwaoi’s partnership
let’s talk about the conditions of the toss first: karasuno was at match point and the position from which he had to toss was very tough. iwaizumi was the furthest spiker he could’ve tossed to (kyoutani and kindaichi were nearer) so it’d take the most force to get the ball to him
there was also the fact that no one was really expecting him to make a proper set with that ball. it would’ve been more practical to simply send the ball to the other set of the net however possible. so who else would he toss to when no one expected a toss at all? iwaizumi ofc
this is the first comment kageyama makes about iwaoi’s partnership. another translation says “they have what you call a non-verbal understanding”. oikawa’s last toss restates this: even when no one expected a toss, the only one who could’ve spiked one w/o much notice was iwaizumi
interestingly enough, recently a professional volleyball player made the same comment on them upon viewing that particular set.

what kageyama said was subtly referred to in the flashback where iwaizumi is shown to be able to differentiate between oikawa’s sincere and forced smiles. it wasn’t included for no reason. this was a small reminder and a foreshadow: when everyone would expect one thing from
oikawa, iwaizumi would be the only one who’d be able to expect the complete opposite because he knows oikawa best, is connected both physically and mentally with him on and off the court
the second comment (and u probs guessed this) is this. again, oikawa’s last toss was made when karasuno was at match point. the stakes couldn’t have been higher than that, which is exactly why he sent the ball to iwaizumi - the one he meshes best with and thus has the highest
chance of scoring with when in a pinch. this line also served to portray kageyama’s character development which is a thread for later
in other words, oikawa’s last toss was the final nail in the coffin that represented iwaoi’s strong partnership. it wasn’t just iwaizumi who considered oikawa as a partner he could boast about. oikawa also knew iwa was his strongest companion, hence his complete faith in him.
that one scene truly solidified furudate’s ability to use dialogues that are important in both the present and the future. when in a tough spot, oikawa would always count on iwa, even if he’d be the hardest to reach. together, they exemplified a perfect partnership.
