A THREAD: some of my favorite Indian designers
—in order to progress in the fashion industry it is imperative to look beyond the scope of typical western designers & recognize designers from across the world.
Bibhu Mohapatra—born & raised in Rourkela, India, he originally moved to the US to study economics but his adoration for fashion led him to study at FIT in NYC.

He specializes in resort & ready to wear after setting up his brand 12 years ago.
He won the 1997 critics award for best evening wear designer of the year & has dressed celebrities as infamous as former first lady Michelle Obama
Rahul Mishra— he studied at the National Institute of Design & is now based in Delhi. He won the International Woolmark prize in 2014 at Milan fashion week, becoming the first Indian designer to win the award.
his approach to building his brand is embedded in his deep rooted respect for the origin of his materials, sustainability, & preservation of India’s traditional craftsmanship. He has showcased at fashion weeks globally, including London, Dubai, Australia, & of course, India
Manish Arora— based in Delhi after studying at the National Institute of Fashion Technology, he is one of India’s most widely recognized designers. Known for his “quirky” designs, he has had several creative partnerships with brands such as MAC & Swarovski
He oversees the production of three in house fashion labels, including French fashion house, Paco Rabbane, where he was appointed as creative director on 2011, until 2012 when he sought to expand his own label.
Sabyasachi Mukherjee— initially planning to enter the medical field, he was drawn to the fashion world. He is often celebrated for his distinctly modern take on traditional Indian garments. He opened his label with only 3 employees & debuted in 2002 at Indian Fashion week
Mukherjee was the first Indian designer to partake in Milan Fashion week & is respected as one of the Associate Designer Members of Fashion Design Council of India and the youngest board member of the National Museum of Indian Cinema.
“Using indigenous crafts of dying and weaving fabric, incorporated with modern silhouettes, he has spearheaded a push by Indian designers into the broader international fashion market.”
Honorable mention: a quote from king Sabyasachi, “sexiness is a confidence issue & not a size issue”
Rajesh Pratap Singh— After studying at NIFT & before launching his brand in 1997, he trained with Italian menswear brand, Marzotto. He has dressed celebrities such as Deepika Padukone & was awarded designer of the year by GQ India in 2009 and by Elle magazine in 2007.
Going against the typical norm of his fellow Indian designers, Singh favours clean, contemporary silhouettes, rather than heavily embellished garments. “ [His] signature garments feature clean lines and painstaking details, all made of artisan textiles from his native India.”
this is getting a lot more attention than i expected so thank you to everyone appreciating these talented designers!! i hope in the future there will be more indian representation in the fashion world & fashion weeks ahead. i’ll add more to this thread over time xx
