To anyone who's owned, or more specifically, bought a horse while in college- do you think it was a good idea, or do you wish you would have waited? How difficult was it to balance animal care and school? Would it be a better idea to wait until a job is landed
after school?
On that note, I am completely independent in every aspect and receive no assistance in any way shape or form, nor have I since 18. I get by alright but have to work multiple jobs. I'm probably about 1.5-2yrs from graduating (5th year club) depending on how things work out.
On that note, what are some of the best questions to ask sellers? What are some red flags?

Is it permissable to ask to see any x-rays if they have them/health records? To ask what their current diet/nutrition is? To ask for more conformation photos? To see papers if available?
Been riding for 10 years now with a focus on horsemanship the first 7, but have only began lessons in dressage the past 3ish years. Started my first partial lease last June.

Is a green horse a bad idea for a first horse? Don't really want a greenie but wanted to hear thoughts.
Has anyone ever taken out a small (5k or less) loan for a horse? Or, a lease-to- own option?

How much should be in an emergency fund for said horse? My thoughts are 5-10k minimum especially depending on whether it is insured, age, purpose, etc.
Has anyone here found that certain breeds/types are *generally* more expensive than others in regards to long-term care and upkeep?

I'm a draft fan and am keen on a draft or draft×. In the end, a calm and laid-back personality is most important to me, irregardless of breed.
What is something you wish you wish would have done or done differently during both the searching/shopping and the actual purchasing process?

What is something smart to do or ask while searching? Ways to avoid/spot less-than-honest ads/sellers?
