Alright, because maybe if an abled bodied white lady says to do it, you will.

I keep retweeting articles and tweets from awesome people in the disability space that boil down to "ALT TEXT YOUR IMAGES!!!"

And I just went through a COVID information website and was appalled.
Color contrast errors.

Tables of data that were not tables.

No alt text on images and graphs.

No skip link.

Information read out of order.

LOTS of aria tags, but they were on things that didn't couldn't get KEYBOARD FOCUS.
So everyone whipping these sites up.

PLEASE run an accessibility checker.

Tab through the site. Can you get to every link? Can you activate every link?

Visit the site in a text based browser, can you understand what is being served?
Chrome, Safari, Firefox, Edge all have built in tools to help.

There are tons of free checkers online.

Wave is the most common checker https://wave.webaim.org/
Automated checkers will not capture everything, PAY someone to run through it.

If you can't afford that, learn how to do it yourself.
Not everyone can see.
Not everyone can use a mouse.
Not everyone can use a keyboard.
Some people comprehend better through audio.

Everyone deserves information on how to stay safe in this pandemic.

You can make the information accessible.
Caption your handwashing videos.
Create descriptive transcripts of your handwashing videos.
Give people the ability to manipulate the data without needing sight or a mouse.

Even if it is just three preselected options, that is better than none.
Maybe you say "But Jenn this data is complex, that is why it needs to be an interactive graph, we can't possibly caption it!"

You can and you will.

Even if it is "Line graph of three scenarios. Stay at home lifted has a max peak at May 20 with xx hospitalizations, etc"
You are giving people a chance to know several things.

1. It is a line graph.
2. There are multiple scenarios on it.
3. The max peak of each of the scenarios.

That is SOOO much more useful than nothing at all.
I'm angry.

Maybe I will whip up an accessible d3 graph just to prove it can be done.

Because damnit, everyone needs access to this information.
