Since nobody has asked -- and frankly, that's a little disappointing of y'all -- here are some draft takes. For the Saints, this is as interesting of a first round as I can remember in some time 1/
Honestly, I can talk myself into them taking almost any position. So long as they don't make an obvious blunder, like taking a kicker or RB in RD 1, or trade up, what they do is somewhat justifiable...
If Tua falls to 24 they should definitely take him. I have my questions about him, but learning from somebody with a similar game, like Drew, could be a huge help. Plus a year to get right with all his injuries. Otherwise? Pass on the rest of the supposed 1st rd QBs
Jordan Love is a project. Big arm, not accurate. Kind of guy you draft low and try to grow. Not an immediate heir apparent. Justin Herbert struggles to anticipate. If he struggles to anticipate throws in college, holy shit are NFL defenses going to feast on that kid.
So if we're not talking Burrow or Tua, I'm passing on a QB. The biggest thing for the #Saints as they are presently constructed, is to add more playmakers. That can be WR, RB, TE, LB, DB, DL, whatever. Get good players.
This is where I point out that while the Saints have been very good at picking players, they aren't very good at managing the draft itself. Goal should always be to maximize value with the most picks possible. You're going to miss on players.
The more players you draft, the more likely you are to hit on some of them. This is what the Patriots get. They have some absolute stinker drafts of the years. But they find ways to maximize the value.
My first choice? They really need a big-play target opposite Michael Thomas. Somebody like Henry Ruggs or Denzel Mims would be perfect.
Both guys need some work, but in the Saints' system they could have some time to develop. And for now, they can do what they do well, which is stretch a defense.
But since this receiver class is loaded, you don't have to take a WR just because that's the need. You could still get some real value there later on. So lots of other positions could be in play.
LB? Sure. Kenneth Murray worries me a bit. Great speed, sure, but something about him reminds me of the Sedrick Hodge/Cie Grant/James Allen types who had all the size and speed but couldn't play dead.
Patrick Queen would be great. He kind of plays the same position as Demario Davis but you can work around that. But I'll believe the Saints draft an LSU guy when they do it. (this goes back to things I think they're bad at)
Other positions -- offensive line? Sure. Terron Armstead is awesome but he can't stay healthy. So replacing him would make some sense, if you can find a trading partner.
Defensive line? Sure, although that's an admission that the Marcus Davenport trade was a mistake (it was, but I doubt they're ready to admit that)
DB? Sure. You're going to have some difficult choices to make with Marcus Williams and Marshon Lattimore in the coming years. Finding young replacements makes sense.
That isn't to say both players aren't very good and worthy of new deals, just that they're both going to command top-of-the-market contracts and you just can't pay everyone.
RB? Not in round 1, but they have to find somebody else they trust besides Kamara. And don't get me started about what to do with him when his contract ones out. Hell if I know. Love him, but paying a RB big money doesn't seem to work out much.
Clyde Edwards-Helaire would obviously be a great fit. Although I hear he may got a little higher than people think. He's a do-everything guy.
