With the draft coming in just two short days, here's a the Backups final mock draft:
(A Thread)
CIN: Joe Burrow
Go ahead and lock it in. Barring something crazy pre-draft, the Bengals draft their QB of the future, selecting a quarterback who has just completed on the of the best seasons of college football of all time
WAS: Chase Young
The Redskins get to select arguably the best player in the draft and give themselves arguably the best front 7 and pass rush in the league
DET: Jeffrey Okudah
Since we won't be predicting trades in this mock, the Lions select an immediate replacement to Darius Slay in Jeff Okudah. Don't be surprised to see a hungry team trading up into the three spot to select their QB of the future (MIA, LAC, etc.)
NYG: Isaiah Simmons
Gettleman and the New York Giants select Simmons here to beef up a struggling defense. Simmons' ability to play LB, Safety, and Slot Corner makes him a valuable chess piece for the defense. Don't be surprised to see them pick their OT of choice here, either
MIA: Justin Herbert
Not what everyone here at the Backups wants to see, but what we're hearing around the league. Brilliant smokescreen? True adoration? Only draft day will tell. Another possibility for Miami here is OT
LAC: Jedrick Wills
The fall of Tua begins. The Chargers seem to believe in Tyrod Taylor (???), and with Cam and Jameis still on the market, the Chargers select a franchise tackle that played RT at Bama, but we could see swinging to the other side
CAR: Derrick Brown
The Panthers get the chance to upgrade their horrid defensive line with another one of this draft's blue chip prospects. Brown is a disruptive rusher with All-Pro potential and should make Carolina very happy
ARI: Tristan Wirfs
Arizona selects arguably the best OT in the board with Tristan Wirfs. Giving Kyler Murray protection in his newly improved high firepower offense should be a priority. Worst Case Scenario: Wirfs kicks inside to guard and is still a solid piece of the line in AZ
JAX: CJ Henderson
There's a few spots Jacksonville could fill here, but we decided on Henderson to fill their new two cornerback void and bring their secondary back to life. Don't be surprised to see Jacksonville go DT (Kinlaw) here
CLE: Andrew Thomas
The Browns are needy in a few areas on defense, but nothing seems as pressing as the OT need given their chance to take one of the top 4 tackles here. Thomas is a plug and play LT with top tier run blocking skills and excellent pass protection as well
NYJ: Mekhi Becton
Following a meteoric rise to the top tier of tackles this off season, Becton is selected by the Jets, who could use his bear stature protecting Sam Darnold this season.
LVR: Tua Tagavailoa
Wow, what a slide. At this point, another team would for sure have traded up to get him, but Gruden and the Raiders can't pass up the opportunity to grab Tua, despite his injuries. Not the biggest need, but one of the best value picks in this draft so far.
SF: Henry Ruggs III
Unfortunately, Kyle Shanahan gets the opportunity to draft a top receiver of choice here. We think Ruggs would be a scary addition to the Shanahan offense, and given his recent experience with fast receivers, Ruggs may be the first of the top 3 off the board
TB: Javon Kinlaw
With the recent addition of Gronk as a third receiver, Tampa Bay drafts an incredibly disruptive DT to beef up their D-Line. Don't be surprised to see a trade up for a top OT or reach for an OT here.
DEN: CeeDee Lamb
Denver selects a top receiver in this class to put opposite of Courtland Sutton for their young QB. Cornerback is another pressing need, but a shot at Lamb seems too good to pass up.
ATL: AJ Terrell
We feel this is a bit of a reach, but the Falcons have been linked with Terrell pre-draft. Terrell fills the hole left by Desmond Trufant, but don't be surprised to see them go Edge Rusher or trade up for a higher tier CB (possibly as high as top 5??)
DAL: K'Lavon Chaisson
The Cowboys fill a need at edge rusher by selecting one of the rushers with the best burst and bend of the draft. Don't be surprised to see them select a cornerback here too.
MIA: Jerry Jeudy
We know, we know. Far from Miami's most pressing need. However, with the likely chance to get the same quality OT at pick 26, why not select possibly the best receiver in this class for their new franchise QB?
LVR: Justin Jefferson
Las Vegas continues to build on their offense by adding Jefferson to their weak receiving corps. The Raiders could look to strengthen the secondary as well, at either corner or safety.
JAX: Xavier McKinney
Jacksonville doubles up on secondary picks with our top Safety in this draft. They could easily go another Safety here (Winfield, Delpit, Chinn), or surprise us with a receiver pick.
PHI: Kenneth Murray
With quite a few of the top receivers off the board and the best pure linebackers still available, Philadelphia selects Kenneth Murray. With the fall off from receivers being far less steep than the one from linebackers, Philadelphia jumps at the chance.
MIN: Yetur Gross-Matos
Minnesota could go corner or receiver here, but they decide on Gross-Matos to keep him from falling to New England. Minnesota adds a powerful edge rusher to strengthen their line and picks again in three picks.
NE: Patrick Queen
New England selects a Linebacker here to fill the hole left by Kyle Van Noy and start rebuilding their defense. We could also see the Patriots select an edge rusher (Zach Baun perhaps?) or trade up for another option.
NOLA: Jeff Gladney
With Eli Apple all but confirmed not returning to New Orleans, the Saints must fill the void at corner, so Gladney it is. An upgrade at LB could be a possibility, as well as maybe someone like Jordan Love to develop behind Drew Brees at the end of his career.
MIN: Kristian Fulton
The Vikings make a move to replace Xavier Rhodes and save their secondary. We may see them pick a receiver here, and if not, in the second round.
MIA: Austin Jackson
At this point in the draft, Miami has their choice of the second tier OT's. This could be one of many Tackles (Jones, Cleveland, Wilson, Niang, etc.) but Jackson is our choice here, as Miami has a need to fill.
SEA: AJ Epenesa
With Jadeveon Clowney unlikely to return, Seattle has a hole to fill at edge rusher. We think Epenesa is an 8-10 sack power rusher at the next level, and fits well in Seattle's system.
BAL: Zack Baun
Baltimore selects Baun here to help at LB and on the edge. Baun has excellent football IQ and can play in multiple linebacker roles, filling an important spot for Baltimore here.
TEN: Isaiah Wilson
With our 6th OT off the board in the first round, the Titans select Isaiah Wilson to help out protecting Tannehill and leading the way for Derrick Henry with his 6'7" 340 lb frame.
GB: Brandon Aiyuk
Green Bay adds a weapon aside from Davante Adams and adds the twitchy burst of Aiyuk. We think receiver is the most likely target for Green Bay at 30.
SF: Jaylon Johnson
The 49ers need to add coverage help opposite of Richard Sherman. Luckily Johnson is a high-ceiling lock-down corner who will be sure to help San Francisco continue to dominate on the defensive side of the ball.
KC: Cesar Ruiz
With the final pick in the first round, Kansas City strengthens their Interior by adding Michigan's very own. Other targets here could be CB or running back, which could also be pickups later in the draft.
This concludes our final mock draft before the 2020 Draft!
