I can’t believe I’m writing this, but I want to confirm I was one of the people laid off at Protocol today. To say I’m heartbroken would be an understatement. I joined the company with the plan to build something and stay for a very long time.
I began before it had a name. I’d given birth a month earlier, but I believed so strongly in the mission (to report on tech's power) and business model (to rely not only on ads but future pro subscriptions) that I didn’t want to miss the chance.
I’m devastated I won’t be able to see that mission through.
I am beyond proud of the team we built and the work we’ve done in our 8 weeks of publishing. Just last week, I was honored to edit @issielapowsky’s scoop about turmoil at EPIC, which today led to the organization’s president stepping down. https://www.protocol.com/epic-director-marc-rotenberg-leaving-coronavirus
The pitch I made when asking journalists to join me I still believe in. I know everyone at Protocol will continue to do powerful work even under these circumstances, and if you are in a position to hire the other wonderful people who were let go with me, you would be crazy not to
