1/ I never like to disagree with @bgurley (he is usually right) but will try...

in marketplaces, supply > demand

buyers will quickly move to the place that has the best supply. and buyers actually move faster than sellers.

2/ the best thing you can do in a marketplace is manufacture supply.

@Amazon launched with every book ... because it manufactured supply out of the gate. that is the reason demand came to Amazon
3/ the main war @Uber fought with all its rivals was to get the drivers. getting the drivers was much harder than getting consumers. consumers wanted a good product (getting picked up within 5 minutes) which is based on supply.
4/ Supply is just another name for product. the more your supply, the better the product.

buyers like to go where the best product is.

@Upwork is amazing because it has such a great supply.
5/ if supply is the egg and demand is the chicken ...
then the best way to get a marketplace going is to manufacture the eggs somehow.
you need to hack the supply
6/ on Twitter/Instagram/Tiktok, the supply are the people creating content and the demand are the people consuming the content.
the supply (content creators) are MUCH more important.
7/ supply is hackable -- because one can cross-post supply to multiple marketplaces. for instance, you can list your home rental on AirBNB and VRBO.
8/ aggregating demand is crucial.

of course, @bgurley has made about 1000x more money than me on marketplaces. so I disagree with him on this humbly and happy to be proved wrong.
