I think the whole thing with Dark Blue Kiss being underrated
1. GMMTV doing 0 to promote and I know why, it’s not some BL story written by already established woman writing BL only. So it’s not already famous with it’s own fans from years, instead it was made famous by the very
people acting these characters due to their resemblance to the characters.
2. We get a glimpse reality to a couples life after years of being together. Not the cheesy kind of after years of being together but the reality we all mostly deal with.
Not the high school or college and everyone is
"gay" only for that one dude and one dude only cuz so special and no real involvement of family and friends and if then for a scene or two throughout the entire series. Or these heteronormative plots.
Which also applies to SM trying to get together. Most of these BL focus only on getting a couple tgt. and if they try the established, it’s mostly to overdo things or just make it seem as if our inner demons also don't ruin relationships. Pete's inner demon was in insecurity.
Kao's was trying to be the perfect child, which of course stems from his hiding his sexual orientation. Both of these parts existed before. The only thing Non coming into the picture did was make it visible enough for them to actually deal with it.
Why do people flock on Marvel and DC movies? Star Wars etc. Where is the reality in all of this? Based on the Marvel series alone, the world would have died 200 times over and yet somehow, it makes billions with every movie it brings out. There is no Thanos, no Doomsday.
Vibranium doesn’t exist. And still we love. We love it cuz it’s a good escape from our reality. The bad guys are us not the “extraterrestrial”. I don’t see the movies based on the reality of our lives making the same amount of money or waves. Sometimes we forget they exist.
As far as BL goes, it was mainly created by women for fangirls. So good on the eyes aka find cute attractive boys and two, simple stories, easy to swallow and cheesy enough to feed the fetishism and self insert. The end. And mostly it also brings money, easy money.
So you bring a show like Dark Blue Kiss and it’s not going to get the attention it deserves. 1. There isn’t enough cheesiness to feed. Even Sun and Mork weren’t made cheesy. 2. The whole kissing thing is missing. 3. Simple storylines with no real impact and context are missing.
For the average y-girl there isn’t much worth watching left and some gay men I believe wouldn’t want to deal with the reality they are already going through.
At the end, it’s about getting such stories to become a norm and not just the once in a while goodness that happens.
And the only way that’s going to have a drive, is if production companies realize there is money in it. Sad but the truth. And maybe that can force them to start looking for better stories to share. Else it’s going to take another while for it to be a norm.
I’ve watched my fair share of “BL” content over the years to see there hasn’t been much change in the writing or creation of the content in the mass only few are good but the majority are just for shit and giggles. As long as the majority are women writing for men without truly
doing their best to understand what they are doing, I don’t see any change happening soon. It will of course be up to the creative minds behind it, if they are willing to create something good or just make their own content instead of using the books alone.
In this case with Dark Blue Kiss, the director allowed part of his own life into the story. And that is probably one of the reasons if not the main reason I think it turned out so good. We have to let those going through these situations also tell their stories.
