People who have screwed up & are in prison are still people. Just like any one of us they still have rights. We curb their right to liberty through the justice system but the right to be free from torture is absolute, the right to life can't be curbed. Just like for all of us
I've been thinking about this as we go out, asking for transparency around what's happening in prisons. People in prison are often the most difficult to get public support for. They're vilified & other-ed. Absolutely there are people in there who are awful. But we're all human
I've especially been thinking about people in prison & kindness in light of what we face together. We're all being tested. Some much more than others. We can face a crisis by turning on each other or we can face it collectively. United. We must take our most vulnerable with us.
As we're being tested by Covid we may see our stress levels spike, our support systems break down. We may lose income, relationships, loved ones. How do you cope? If you've had a good life, have resources, probably well. It's tough but your brain helps you. What if you don't?
People who commit crimes are often in situations where they don't have support networks or they feel like they have no choices. We may see a rise in people feeling helpless, desperate in the months ahead. How will we meet their humanity? It will be a challenge for us all
Amnesty has always advocated for the rights of ALL people. That is the point of human rights. We can't shy away from people that may not look like us or may have done bad things. They deserve their fundamental rights upheld as anyone does. It's not all cute charity feel good shit
How we treat people with the least power in society is the true test of our humanity. We will keep rising up to demand rights for all. Even through the comment threads, horrendous posts, dog whistling. Why don't you join us?
The last 4 weeks have shown how fragile we all are.
