STORY TIME: the time caroline calloway stans went after me and contacted mhc admin
first of all, i just want to say that this story is absolutely insane. it’s weird, creepy, and honestly doesn’t make sense. i know i talk about CC a lot here and it’s annoying as fuck, but unfortunately this dumb woman and her supporters have (attempted to) impact my real life
one of my favorite guilty pleasures is to make fun of caroline calloway, or “snark” on her, as others say. she leads an insanely messy and very public life, so a lot of people consider it to be akin to talking about reality tv stars.
a few weeks ago, after CC posted her nude on twitter, i posted a screenshot of this tweet of hers on a subreddit devoted to snarking on her. it pissed me off that she was proclaiming to be a part of lesbian twitter, and so i said so.
a day or so after i posted to that subreddit, i got a notification that it had been reported and taken down, only to be reposted a few hours later. a subreddit moderator messaged me and apologized. i didn’t think much of it.
today, i got an email from an admin member at mhc. it was super, super cryptic — the subject line was “concern” and it was this insanely vague email about my “social media activity” and asked if we could talk about it.
i had no idea what this was about, and i am not about to waste time talking to a res-life person 2 weeks before graduation. so i (politely) asked for clarification before i agreed to meet.
before i got a reply, i really wondered what the hell they were talking about. was it the marginally negative tweets ab mhc? the meme group? depression tweets? none of it made sense, and i really had no idea what was going on for a few hours.
it was so fucking weird. why the fuck would admin email me about some mild content. this is a pandemic — who the fuck has time to police this? and why?
but then i got a reply from the admin member, who basically said (paraphrasing, i don’t really want to share screenshots from a potentially confidential email):
“a non-mhc person contacted our office with screenshots from reddit about someone named caroline. this person thought the posts were offensive, and showed some other posts you made about the college.” (1/2)
“we won’t be turning this into an honor code case since it is about non-mhc people, but we wanted to touch base about what your tweets about the college said.” (2/2)
basically, this random cc stan saw something i posted on reddit (which is really bare and i rarely use), found my twitter from other reddit comments/posts i had made, went through it, and then told the mhc admin, hoping i would face some consequences
i have no idea why someone would do this about mild tweets, but it’s really creepy. i have heard of people going irl with dumb twitter fights, but i didn’t think someone would actually do it over CC tweets. i am amazed and horrified all at once.
anyway, don’t fucking do this! if ur mad at someone online, just block them and move on! don’t waste so much time and something so fucking pointless!
i’m also pissed that mt h*lyoke would waste their time with this. there is a global pandemic right now. you have students facing very real crises. why do you fucking care about one of your students talking about an influencer online?
