Malësia e Madhe is a northwestern region of Albanian land. 60% of the region is in the Republic of Albania, while the other portion lays modern day Montenegro, being cut in half at the London Conference in 1913.
Malësia is divided into 7 tribes. Albanians being an unruly people who didn't like to take orders from others, the Ottomans created a bayrak system, having an Albanian from each region lead their own people. The order goes: Hoti, Gruda, Kelmendi, Kastrati, Shkreli, Trieshi, Koja.
Hoti's origin: Keq Preka had to leave his home due to raiding Slavs and settled in a region called Piperi in modern day Montenegro. There, he married a local and had 6 sons. One of his sons killed a local, and to avoid blood vengeance, Keqi asked if his sons could leave...
The locals allowed it, and 5 of his sons went on, only the youngest remained with his old father. 2 of the brothers stook together, Lazar & Ban Keqi. Lazari settled south of the Cem River, Bani settled north of it. Lazar had 1 son, Geg Lazari who is seen as the father of Hoti.
The name "Hot" may derive from the original inhabitants of the land, who either left or assimilated into the new tribe. Hotjan are mostly Catholic and celebrate the feast of St John on August 29th.
Some notable Hotjan are Çun Mula, Dedë Gjo' Luli, Martin Camaj, Ukshin Hoti
