My students love the videos I had created for the course. These have been generally appreciated over the years, but I think they became a safety blanket when we switched to emergency instruction for #instructionalcontinuity 2/
Early on, I would get a handful of comments that would essentially boil down to: "I wish she would lecture more" or "I don't learn best by teaching myself." These came to a trickle in the past few years. 3/
I haven't gotten formal feedback yet, but anecdotally, my students are sharing that the transition in this course has been smooth. We kept the rhythm going: prep for class, meet to practice, practice some more on your own. 4/
Here is the #1 question I asked myself in redesigning this course to the #flippedclassroom: What is the point in assembling in a brick and mortar classroom? And then: How can I maximize that experience? 5/
Which is why this transition has been less than smooth on my end. I baked in collaborative learning meant to be done side-by-side in the same physical space synchronously. Some of it could be maintained, but some of it had to be adjusted to be more #Inclusive. 6/
So while some of my colleagues are/were frantically recording content, I had to ask myself: how can I modify this in class collaborative practice (much in short interspersed spurts) to be done in fits and starts online with an asynchronous option. 7/
But what I am comforted by is that the fundamentals were in place. We had the good fortune to meet & establish good learning patterns. The students may not have liked the accountability, but they've been appreciative, esp. now as so much of their schedule seems amorphous. 8/
Given more time/space, this could make an excellent online or hybrid course. The videos were an important piece that allows for flexibility. Because community was established in person, we could coast in remote. We were far enough along to set norms. All good things. 9/
