Watched a projection of how Malawi will fare with COVID19, the summary of it is basically we can’t successfully “flatten the curve” because a lockdown in nearly impossible due to widespread poverty. The need for folk to seek their “daily bread” means movement can’t be restricted.
Second bigger reason is the fact our health care system is already on its knees and severely challenged, flattening the curve works by managing transmissions so that the health system can effectively treat cases. It can’t work here coz the threshold is already on the floor.
The third sobering fact is that we cannot effectively attain herd immunity because a large number of our population have underlying conditions like HIV, and also malnourishment from poor diet leading to compromised immunity systems in a large number of the population https://abs.twimg.com/emoji/v2/... draggable="false" alt="😩" title="Weary face" aria-label="Emoji: Weary face">.
This DR said community transmission is already at an advanced stage and that in about 2-4 weeks will get a spike in cases, pretty much said there’s nothing much that we can do without outside intervention. We don’t even have running water so we can’t apply basic hygiene.
