I worked for Verizon. I was union. There was an underground C.E.V. that was dangerous to go into. A green light comes on when air is safe. It wouldn't come on. Called my supervisor. Told him. He said hold on. He sent another tech out there. I asked what he was doing there...
He said my supervisor sent him out to watch me. I said watch me? I'm going twenty feet underground & if I pass out no way to get me out & I could die. I called my supervisor & told him I'm not going in. He said, you really want to do this? I said yes....
So he took the job off of me. Two days later I was called into his office & suspended 10 days without pay. Why? He said GPS showed me at Dunkin Donuts in the morning. I said yes. I went to the bathroom. He said, rules say no stopping for food or drink before your first job...
I said I didn't. I went to bathroom. Check security cameras. He suspended me anyway. He said to grieve it. So was I forced to go into a dangerous situation? No. Was I retaliated against because of it? Likely. Btw, it costs me a couple thousand dollars & never got it back...
All because I did the right thing. Because if I went down there, I could've died. Btw. Many others prior to me went down there unsafe & never spoke up. I was the first. So there's that. Not sure what made me think of this. But here we are.
