My answer to this was Simon Gamache. The correctest answer is Paul Kariya, but!

Gamache was 5'9", a D+1 late pick in 2000 by notorious masters of development the Atlanta Thrashers.

00-01: destroyed the Q
01-02: Over a point per game in the ECHL
02-03: Top 5 in AHL U22 Pts/GP https://twitter.com/jtbourne/status/1252664534357225477
I'll add he was 2nd in scoring for the Chicago Wolves and scored 7 playoff goals in 9 games.

03-04: Got two games with the Thrashers, played under 7 minutes per game, moved to Nashville, still had a great AHL year.

04-05: Led the Milwaukee Admirals in scoring by 35 points.
05-06: 11 games post lockout with the Preds with 8 minutes of ice time. Guys with similar ice time? Jeremy Stevenson, Jordin Tootoo, and Darcy Hordichuk. Claimed by the Blues, got 14 minutes of ice time, and had 7 points in 15 games. Who would've thought?
06-07: Casually leaves the NHL for SC Bern because wouldn't you? Led the league with 1.5 points per game. 2nd leading scorer? Alexandre Daigle.

07-08: Gets a show-me deal from the Leafs in the first season there's possession data. Makes the team. Does this.
Gamache had under 10 minutes of ice time with Toronto in his 11 games with the Leafs, still had four points, and his linemates included Wade Belak, John Pohl, and a 32 year old Darcy Tucker, but got all of his points in 3 straight games playing with Matt Stajan.
Still had a PDO of 96 in his time with the late 2000's Leafs (on-ice save percentage of 87.2).

56.8% CF%
2.26 pts/60

Sent to the Marlies for some reason, and left to go back to Bern and score 212 points in 205 NLA games to play into his 30's.
So yes, seems like a guy who did everything but succeed in the NHL in the wrong era.

I also have a gut feeling that this guy would also struggle to get a long look in 2020, let alone the early 2000's.
As a brief aside, way back in his first full AHL season, being Top-5 in U22 scoring, Jason Spezza and Mike Cammalleri were two of the three guys ahead of him. Cammalleri played 13 games.

+/- is trash, but Gamache was +15, while Cammalleri and Spezza were -4 and -5 respectively.
In remembrance of Gamache's stint with Toronto, here is him absolutely clapping a puck into 2020.
