TOP 10 MOST CONTROVERSIAL VOGUE MAGAZINE COVERS, a thread
Vogue Hommes International Fall/Winter 2012, starring Stephanie Seymour and Marlon Teixeira. In addition to the obvious sexual gesture, he's holding her neck, which made people think that both sexual abuse and domestic violence were being romanticized. Terry Richardson shot it.
Vogue Italia September 2011, starring Stella Tennant. Supposed to be a tribute to Ether Granger, the woman with the smallest waist in the world. Many people applauded Stella for modeling with that forced 13-inch waist, many others thought it promoted impossible beauty standards
Vogue U.S April 2008, starring LeBron James and Gisele Bündchen. LeBron became the first black man to appear on the cover of Vogue U.S. Many found it racist due to its resemblance to an old poster of King Kong and captive Fay Wray.
Vogue Italia 'Black Issue' July 2008, starring Naomi Campbell, Liya Kebede, Jourdan Dunn and Sessilee López. It had 100 pages of black models, all shot by Steven Meisel. They created this issue to protest against the lack of black models in the industry.
Vogue Paris March 2016, starring Gigi Hadid. This cover which I personally don't find any problem with had a lot of media attention since who appears naked is Gigi Hadid. Although it shows nothing, it was found to be very sensual and sexual. Many others found it disgusting.
Vogue Hommes Japan September 2011, starring Lady Gaga. Do we need an explanation? It's real meat and was shot by Terry Richardson (disgusting). Although it was said to be a political statement, the response it received wasn't very good.
Vogue Paris March 2017, starring Valentina Sampaio. The Brazilian beauty became the very first transgender model on the cover of Vogue Paris. Although many applauded this, myself included, many others found her presence to be not a good example and that it'd confuse the children
Vogue Italia May 2018, starring Gigi Hadid. It didn't look like her. Then the focus shifted to another issue. "Did they want to make her black?" People accused the magazine and Gigi of Blackfishing. Her Instagram was filled with accusations. She gave an explanation and apologies.
Vogue Japan November 2019, starring Adut Akech. Some people thought there were racist undertones on it because of the black pointy hoodie.
Vogue U.S March 2012, starring Adele. People thought it was 'too much Photoshop' on her face because of the airbrushed look but some others thought she also was looking skinnier and 'different'.
Hope you enjoyed it.
It was supposed to be a Top 20 and about fashion magazines overall. It wasn't just about Vogue. But all the ones I could think of were Vogue and when researching the only fashion magazines were Vogue. I'll surely do a Part ll, but on controversial magazine covers in general.
Here's Part ll: https://twitter.com/SupermodelGoals/status/1253451552670519298?s=19
