it may be that #Facebook is doing the right thing here. these are uncertain times. but i do have some questions. https://twitter.com/juliacarriew/status/1252425784083415049
is the policy genuinely viewpoint neutral? seems like there have been other public protests - are they all forbidden from organizing on Facebook? or do people think there’s a necessity to target anti-lockdown protests?
this is portrayed as a binary - take down pages or leave them up. are other options considered? transparency around organizers/funders/campaign connections? limiting inauthentic behavior? i imagine so, would be interesting to know more.
is the policy implemented globally? eg, did the Israeli protestors against Netanyahu this weekend organize on facebook? how does the company, whose employees are locked down like most of us, gain access to info about local laws in the countless jurisdictions where it’s available?
what communications are governments having with the platforms right now about this and other rules? here the governors say they didn’t make demands. but when would a government demand lead Fb to change policy? what would that demand have to look like formally?
look, fb & all the platforms have the ability to take these decisions without fear of liability or accountability. but b/c they’re really standing in the shoes of government regulators here, i think we’re owed maximum transparency.
