God *is* love. But it is so unimaginably greater than our fallen human love that we have a hard time grasping it, and could never reciprocate it. But we won't feel it in the same butterflies and tingles love we have for each other and people in this world since His love manifests
itself different. Which is why people like St Porphyrios can be dying of cancer and living in perpetual agony and still say that it is from God's love that he is suffering.

But if we think He isn't perfect love, then we're denying Who He is. When we sin, it's not Him turning from
us, but us from Him. Yet He still perfectly loves and forgives, and is patiently waiting for us to turn back to Him. Like the parable of the prodigal son, the Father is always waiting in love for the return of his child. And we have to remember that no matter what we do, there's
nothing above His forgiveness and love.

Yes, we are garbage. We should expect that since we are fallen and under the corruption of sin. Which is why He became incarnate as man, to defeat death and ultimately save us from sin and death so we can be united to Him and become by
grace what He is in nature. Being Christian isn't about living a perfect or sinless life, this is impossible. But it's about repentance and turning our lives towards Christ. Even when we fall or life is miserable, this comes from Him and is a chance for us to turn towards Him.
Like St Paisios said, God has the final say in everything. He wins, no matter what. Even if we are stupid idiots. And He wants us with Him. When we sit around worrying about it, or feeling despair, were forgetting Christ and focusing on ourselves and thinking that we are somehow
greater than He is (if He can't forgive or love us, then we must be greater than Him). Ultimately it doesn't matter than were stupid and sinful, because He loves and forgives regardless so long as we repent and keep fighting. St Paul calls it a race that we run. He has already
triumphed against sin and death, we just need to participate with Him in our lives so He can do the same in us on this personal level. But He has already won, and will always win.
If God is with us, who can be against us (Romans 8:31)

- sent someone a message about despair, and thought I would share part of it here (it's clearly formatted and worded poorly, but I don't have time to fix it up).
It's something a lot of us struggle with, yet really shouldn't because Christ is risen and death has been trampled!
