Picking up from an earlier post👇How does the Rota work? What is this hullabaloo about Newspapers losing money? https://twitter.com/MaadhureeS/status/1252527678277799939?s=20
These people own the Rota.
Sun; Times (Murdock);
Daily Mail (Lord Rothermere);
Mirror (Reach plc (somewhat liberal));
Express (Richard Desmond);
Telegraph (Barclay brothers);
Evening Standard (Lebedev Brothers (Ex-KGB))
When Sun newspaper loses circulation, it loses revenue (sale/advertising). We rejoice. WRONG. The thing is leaving Reach PLC, everyone on the list is a billionaire who can afford to run these papers even if they are bleeding money, EVERYDAY. Then what is the Big Fucking Deal?
The Sun’s biggest boast is that it has the largest circulation in UK. Largest circulation means largest influence. That is the whole point behind Billionaires owning media. They get to decide “what, when & how much the public will know about who”
Which is why newsagents still walk around Liverpool offering free copies of Sun. Because it a large section of public beyond their reach . No one is dying to get the masses informed; the race is to spread “their version” of news. That is how they keep control on elections, govt.
I always sigh when people say that newspapers are losing money, meaning they will go away when bankrupt. Maybe the print editions, but not the online versions -which are cheaper to run & currently more lucrative- will stay. Also Govt. will bail their propaganda means out. So

So, if you want to really reduce their influence, do not click their online sites.

Anyway, where do the where do the Royals fit into this?
When it come to Power & Money things get very complex. Remembers the Royals, Billionaires, Editors are real people with personal desires, fears; aside from this powerplay of money & influence. But for now lets keep things one dimensional-these are people with money who want power
To being with I want everyone to take another look at that list of billionaires. That is 4 billionaires, with deep pockets & high reach in UK & USA, whom Harry refused publicly.
So think again, when you say Harry is brave. NO. Prince Henry Charles Albert David is FUCKING brave. & Princess Rachel Meghan probably has ovaries of steel to have gone along with this.
To Explain the role of Royals in this we will take example of Sun & Times. Both owned by Murdoch, but notice that the tone of the Times has been kept distinguish highbrow – because it is not for the Hoards.
The Hoards get the Sun, which churns out important news in snippets, interspaced by a NipSlip here & a divorce there. The Sun’s objective is to entertain, not inform. The Royals always complain about not being celebrities.
Truth is they operate as in an interesting limbo between celebrity & reverence. Most of the times for Tabloids they are celebrities (ex. gleeful printing of Kate’s Merilyn moments; ferocious incitement of P. Morgan’s obsession with Meghan).
They also have almost reverential power (ex. Diana’s death almost brought monarchy to knees).
Royals are also useful scapegoats for Govt. (ex. when the Tory Govt. in Dec. 2019 got the Queen to sign orders to prorogue (suspend) parliament, trending #AbolishTheMonarchy put majority of blame on Queen; not Boris who lied to Queen).
Now coming back to my original question: what does the Rota do for Royals? In simple terms, it helps them survive. The saying is that when the Royals want to leak something, they go to Times, but if they want to defend/clean up something, they go to Telegraph.
Frankly, William is the first royal to have debased himself by dealing with the Sun. & that was because the details of his affair with Rose Hanbury are stored with Dan Wootton, editor of Sun, who naturally wanted to keep things inhouse.
Why share the bounty with Times when Sun did the reaping? In any case, the idea was to threaten & then conceal the affair. William and Middletons are the Goose that lay Golden Eggs, nobody wants to slay them in a hurry.
A reminder, by the time Harry was born(1984), Charles had resumed his “contact” with Camilla. Her husband Andrew Parker Bowels would famously “go for a walk” when Charles dropped by; everybody knew in posh circles, news editors knew too. Still the affair did not "leak" until 1992
đŸ‘‡đŸŒEx. of Telegraph cleaning up after Charles Spider Memos (one of the biggest breach of constitutional limits by royals). Guardian broke the story, Govt. denied importance, Telegraph cleaned it up.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_spider_memos
If Time is for leaking & Telegraph for cleanup, then why deal with Tabloids. Because tabloids provide distraction. For the first week everybody picked Spider Memos story up. But after that the distraction began.
When Charles’ Spider Memos were being discussed by intellectual newspapers such as Guardian, Sun & DailyMail would splash 4-5 big stories Kate’s kiddos, Harry’s supposed new love interest; with 1 piece in the end about Charles’ Memos.
The idea was to drive that story out of public interest. It worked, even now people think Sprider Memos was a small issue. This was supposed to be the life-long purpose of Harry - the spare. Problem was Royal do not learn from their mistakes.
Just like Diana became bigger than the Royals. Harry was becoming bigger than the Royals. For years he was consistently more popular than the heirs, more respected, & sought after. When Meghan was added to the mix - they were not just Hot, they were Explosive Hot.
Also, I should add when the UK news were sifting through or downplaying Charles' Spider Memos, Prince Harry was sent on his solo Australia/New Zealand tour. Result: International press ate up Harry's widely successful tour, with maybe a passing mention of Charles' Memos.
The point I am making is that Tabloids are essential for Royal survival. They provide sanctioned distraction, when royals make mistakes. They cover royal engagement in sensationalized snippets of fashion, body language & no one asks about the actual impact of those engagements
Harry & his wife were supposed to be that distraction for when William & his wife fuck up. Harry broke the contract. Of course they are pissed. Not only did he break the contract, he also jeopardized the tenuous deal of quid pro quo between royals & tabloids.
Everybody knows tabloids have been sitting on a healthy pile of Windsor secrets, to be brought to light whenever the Windsors tried to side step them. Look at William-the golden heir, tabloids have been using him to taunt Charles for a long time.
Every year at least once, sun runs a headline “this %age of public want William to be next king instead of Charles”. Few days later some column at Telegraph declares Charles to be remarkably Kingly, ala Prince’s trust, environment, long wait to the throne đŸ€·đŸ»â€â™€ïž
William was always sheltered as a teenager & young man, his mistakes hidden, his smallest achievement elevated to marvel, his choices deemed perfect. B’cos Royals wanted to reassure the pubic that Diana was dead but her image had remained - look at William Diana’s perfect son
But nobody really explained this to William, he probably bought his own hype. At one time he was heaving & pulling at tabloids - suing & setting limits. Well tabloids knew William has a things for women, so they sent out feelers & caught Rose Hanbury.
William was never made to own his mistakes it would have been impossible for him to “let the chips fall where it may”. He cannot stand being mocked, slighted. He has be revered by public, supported by wife, adored by celebrities, just because he is William; like it used to be.
I always pictured a scenario: Fab Four are sitting in a Royal Foundation meeting. And William promotes one of his half baked ideas about what should the people do (ex. Africans should not have too many children) or
the people want him to go drink beer while watch football in the name of mental health or he should be the patron of homeless charity because he spent that one night on the pavement many years ago.
And Meghan asks “how would you know? Did you ask them?” And William blew a Royal gasket. Something like this probably never happened; but it would not have taken Meghan long to figure out that there aren’t many brain cells between those blue Windsor eyes.
