One thing this last week or so has made clear is how deeply broken and over-adapted to oppression USians are, particularly those in more privileged positions.

In one month since everything crumbled and people started taking COVID seriously, it became normalized and any sense of urgency is gone. Exposure to it and risks of infecting others has become an acceptable risk to many if they can get back to normalcy.

It took 6 months for the US to normalize president Burlap Sack's bullshit (and we are honestly impressed they held out that long). Plus with the mind boggling amount of shit he pulls, thirst for normalcy among the privileged is likely at an all time high.

That was the entire premise of Biden's campaign, to return to what people perceive as a pre-Trump normalcy (which will be impossible, and even then shit was breaking down; it was just less noticed by them).

In US culture surrender to the capitalist status quo is seen as a milestone of growing up. Wanting to change things is seen as idealistic youth, and wanting to do so as an adult is seen as childish and a sign of arrested social development.

On top of that the political stamina not to mention the political attention span of USians is very brief. From the US perspective, politics is just a passive event like a TV show. They are entertained and engaged for a while, but eventually they get bored.

Capitalism was closer to being demolished because of COIVD then it was at any time since the great depression. However, rather than demand changes to make sure people are safe like the depression, people are demanding to return to normalcy because they are bored.

People resonate with that message of "return to normalcy because having to be politically aware is boring and makes you sad" so much a rapist moderate Republican can get the Dem nominee running on that message.

(Heck, that's how Reagan got in to office too, selling the boomers their childhood because leftism and the inflation and energy crises were making privileged people sad and bored).
