Gov. Stitt, Comanche Nation Chairman William Nelson and Otoe-Missouria Tribe Chairman John Shotton released a joint statement saying the agreements are in the "best interest" of the parties and that they'll "enable tribes to adapt to a rapidly changing environment."
Among other changes, the compacts -- which need approval from the Dept. of the Interior -- authorize the tribes to conduct ❗️sports betting ❗️(called Event Wagering) at two facilities, or lease or sell that right
Here are some of the conditions around sports betting, including no betting on college sports in Oklahoma, reserving the right of the state to license up to five sports betting locations, physical presence for betting, etc.
Sports betting is obviously not legal in Oklahoma apart from this. Stitt says he doesn't need legislative approval because the Governor is authorized to conduct tribal gaming negotiations
Stitt remains locked in mediation with the state's largest tribes, including the Cherokee, Chickasaw, Choctaw, Citizen Potawatomi, Muscogee (Creek) and Seminole nations.
INBOX: Oklahoma Indian Gaming Association chairman says he believes Stitt can not legally authorize sport betting without the legislature’s approval, and that he “suspect(s) his actions have not helped matters for anyone.”
❗️NEW: Oklahoma Attorney General Mike Hunter pushes back on today's compacts, saying that while Gov. Stitt is authorized to negotiate compacts, sports betting cannot be included in a compact because it's not in the State-Tribal Gaming Act.
