Today is #YomHaShoah - Holocaust Remembrance Day. Today we remember the 12,000,000 people who were murdered by the Nazis, including 6,000,000 Jews.
In 2006, I traveled to Eastern Europe to see camps firsthand. #YomHaShoah
Nothing prepares you for the size and scale of the camps. #YomHaShoah
Auschwitz-Birkenau is massive. Each chimney is the remains of a barracks that housed hundreds of Jews who were sent to their untimely deaths. #YomHaShoah
They were sent to die in gas chambers that could hold almost 1,000 per cycle. #YomHaShoah
Death by gas asphyxiation is a horrific death. #YomHaShoah
Sixty years later the walls still bear scratch marks and are stained with blue resin from the gas. #YomHaShoah
If you were ‘lucky’ you were sent to a work camp, like Auschwitz. #YomHaShoah
For most? It was straight to a death camp, often in the middle of nowhere. #YomHaShoah
Others were simply executed and thrown in unmarked graves. #YomHaShoah
Despite the hopelessness of the situation, some, like the fighters in the Warsaw ghetto, rose up to fight the Nazis. #YomHaShoah
Others, like Oskar Schindler, refused to stand by as the Nazis implemented their plan, and did what they could to save lives. #YomHaShoah
Today we remember so that those whose lives were stolen did not die in vain. We recommit ourselves to the promise #NeverAgain. #YomHaShoah
