Since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, our team has been working hard to help community media organizations in New York and across the country get to the other side of this crisis.
We& #39;ve been doing daily interviews w/ publishers and collecting responses to a needs assessment survey. We share findings in our newsletter, which also includes information about resources available elsewhere. Subscribe and read past issues here: https://bit.ly/34P8Szq .">https://bit.ly/34P8Szq&q...
We published a report on the impact of COVID-19 on media serving immigrant communities https://bit.ly/3bqjvey ">https://bit.ly/3bqjvey&q... (by @dhgerson). Coming soon: a data analysis of pandemic coverage in Spanish-language media (by @ronnyrojas).
We’ll soon share a report on how community public radio is serving rural areas and tribal lands. This is an important part of what we do: we gather data that is not available elsewhere, create awareness, and offer greater visibility to media sectors covering communities of color.
We offer direct support to media orgs, including free consultations on how to apply for SBA loans, a conversation on NYC’s SBS support for outlets (this Thursday), and a series on how to find new revenue streams during the pandemic (today at 2 pm). https://bit.ly/34SUru9 ">https://bit.ly/34SUru9&q...
We have a program in place to help NYC community media outlets receive more advertising funds from city agencies which is proving to be a lifeline to many at a time of drastic loss of commercial advertising. To know more, email Darlie Gervais at darlie.gervais@journalism.cuny.edu
We& #39;re directly supporting (with resources, training & information) our regional partners: @ChicIndyMedia, a coalition of 50+ community media outlets in Chicago, and @NFCB, which represents almost 200 community radio stations in rural areas and tribal lands.
We are soon launching a program for outlets based along the U.S.-Mexico border region.
We& #39;ve canceled our annual Latino Media Summit and will instead offer a series of virtual conversations and webinars, including the release of an ambitious content analysis project on Spanish-language media.
Our State of Black Media report is underway and we are expecting to launch it at the end of the fall.
We have several other ongoing data and mapping projects, sustainability programs and plans to expand our network of regional partners. We are a grant-funded organization that is part of a public university ( @newmarkjschool is the only public graduate school of journalism in the Northeast) so we are especially grateful to our funders @DemocracyFund @knightfdn @FordFoundation @Revson_Fdn @Citi @NYCommTrust
