1) Corporal Jonathan Yale and Lance Corporal Jordan Haerter stood their ground in the face of certain death, while others ran. They sacrificed their lives to save over 150 Marines and Iraqi policemen.
2) On April 22, 2008, Yale and Haerter manned an Entry Control Point together, outside a security station in Ramadi. They had just taken over the post, and just met for the first time.
3) Suddenly, a large blue truck sped around the corner and weaved quickly through the serpentine barriers. The Marines knew immediately the suicide attacker was driving a truck bomb. Cpl. Yale leveled his M249 SAW and LCpl. Haerter his M4.
4) Together, they fired as fast as they could, demolishing the windshield and the insurgent at the wheel. Iraqi policemen at the ECP fled the scene as soon as they saw the truck barreling toward the gate.
5) Yale and Haerter did the opposite, leaning into their weapons to keep their rapid fire on target. As soon as the truck stopped, 2,000 lbs of explosives detonated. The bomb leveled the ECP, and most of the city block. Corporal Yale and Lance Corporal Haerter were killed.
6) All the Iraqi policemen who fled survived. A mere six seconds elapsed from the time the truck appeared to the explosion. For their incredible bravery and selfless sacrifice, Cpl Jonathan Yale and Lance Corporal Jordan Haerter were posthumously awarded the Navy Cross.
7) The Iraqi policemen who fled the scene said of them later, "We knew immediately what was going on as soon as the two Marines began firing. Sir, in the name of God, no sane man would have stood there and done what they did. They saved us all." Rest in Peace Marines.🇺🇸
