I& #39;m gonna take this premise and make a few predictions/commentary on DG& #39;s future. https://twitter.com/hannahemcbeth/status/1252473578597089280">https://twitter.com/hannahemc...
1. Yes, I think there will be a decrease in the number of full-time touring players. Savings will be depleted, visibility/promotional opportunities will have been cut for several months.
2. I think next year there will be significant decrease in sanctioned A and B-tiers. With a widespread medium-long term economic downturn probable, tournament sponsorship funds and sales of promotional discs seem likely to decrease, as usual buyers have less disposable income.
3. I think it& #39;s possible that for the foreseeable future there could be an increase in number of people playing disc golf (cheap, solo activity) but a decrease in number of PDGA members and/or tournament players (same logic as 2., less disposable income).
4. Media--several well-known providers have quit their day jobs to focus on DG media. I could see some going back to steady work if they can find it, but I could also see an increase in videographers/editors as folks get laid off and find their niche.
5. Tournaments--the DGPT and NT being in a coherent geographic/temporal order has consolidated many touring players, somewhat at the expense of some established regional events. Will balance shift back if players are concerned about making travel/event plans months in advance?
6. On a larger scale of 2., who& #39;s putting in a bid to host a Major right now? (Not I, said the cautious TD!)
7. If events resume this year, will we be able to tell who stayed sharp and who moped around and ate Twinkies?
8. International travel will be curtailed for at least a couple years, and it& #39;s possible that the US& #39;s response will result in fewer players wanting to come to the US, let alone being allowed to freely.
9. The players who had already established or shifted their platforms to social media production will have increased lobbying power with their sponsors.
10. Sponsors (manufacturers, distributors, etc) will decrease the number of players they sponsor next year, and reduce perks to the players they do sponsor.
11. Even when/if the season resumes, it will be VERY difficult for manufacturers to meet demand for their backlog of production and orders. Some tournaments won& #39;t receive their stamped discs in time, and that& #39;ll have a ripple effect with their player base re: TD future.
