I'm seeing some odd comments about Animal Crossing 'heteronormativity'. Heteronormativity is where rules/systems don't make sense for gay people, e.g. man+woman couple pairing at a wedding. Animal Crossing isn't an example of heteronormativity. (1/x)
They are cartoon animals (sorry if that offends you, #ac community - but it's true). They have weird coloured hair. They're fun, slightly gendered but ultimately unimportant, innocent and unpolitical 3D models. (3/x)
And even if they were 'extremely gendered', and being straight seemed to be bizarrely a key part of their identity, do I have to remind people that being straight is, indeed, statistically the most likely descriptor for a couple?
It does seem you can't win, though. The 'looney left' (I'm probably in that group) want every subgroup and subculture represented. Overall, they should be... in all the little storylines. It's OK for the main characters* to be straight in 2020. *unreal 3D models
You can't win because it would be 'political correctness gone mad' according to the political right. I really don't understand why people can't just enjoy a game at face value. It's a game. It's fun. Live your life be free. (x/x)
After reading again this thread seemed a little insensitive. I stand by my point on statistics. Of course people connect game models to people, and all the groups of people should be represented in a game. It is not 'complete fantasy' (bizarre I know); it's almost... aspirational
Yes, people want their lives to be like Animal Crossing. That's why diverse characters need to be in the game. Games like Time Crisis, Halo? Off the charts unrealism. They can be as straight as they like (although the association of masculinity and being straight is sad!)
