Pull up a chair... we've got to discuss the 49ers RB situation.

And what their front office has done to acquire RBs since John Lynch took over in 2017.
The 49ers had two undrafted free agent RBs in 2017 (Matt Brieda & Raheem Mostert).

They annually outperform the team’s RB1s, but SF continues to overpay for FA RBs nevertheless, regularly adding vet RBs through free agency -> the single worst worst type of RB a team can acquire.
Pre-2017 season

After a short run on RBs in the 4th round, the 49ers traded up in the 4th, (from pick 143 to pick 121) to draft RB Joe Williams.

The Colts received the 49ers picks 143 and 161.

With the 143rd pick, the 49ers original pick, the Colts drafted RB Marlon Mack.
RB Joe Williams had “alarming” fumbling issues in the preseason & was buried on the RB depth chart.

By SEP, he was placed on the IR with an ankle injury.

Even after his ankle fully healed, he couldn’t win the battle for third-string RB & was out of the NFL entirely by 2018.
49ers 2017

Undrafted free agent rookie Matt Brieda outproduced Joe Williams and all other backup RBs in camp.

Carlos Hyde was in his last yr of his deal.

Brieda plays 16 games, carries 105 times & completely outproduces (4.4 YPC, 8.6 YPR) starting RB Hyde (3.9 YPC, 5.9 YPR).
Vikings 2017:

In his final year of his rookie deal in Minnesota, Jerick McKinnon (a former 3rd round pick from Georgia Southern) runs for just 3.8 YPC on 150 att.

It’s his 2nd straight year averaging less than 4.0 YPC (he gained only 3.4 YPC on 159 att in 2016).
Post-2017 season:

The Vikings choose not to re-sign their 2017 RB1, McKinnon.

The 49ers choose not to re-sign their 2017 RB1, Hyde, a RB from the former regime.

The 49ers make McKinnon the highest paid free agent RB & 6th highest overall in the NFL, giving him $30M over 4 yrs.
49ers 2018:

McKinnon misses the entire season due to injury.

For the 2nd straight yr Matt Brieda is the 49ers most impressive RB.

After an impressive rookie season (4.4 YPC, 8.6 YPR) Brieda outperforms those numbers (5.3 YPC, 9.7 YPR), recording the 2nd highest YPC in the NFL.
