At some point, our models run by government leaders need to account for this fact.

It doesn't mean starting lockdowns was wrong, but it will impact how/when we can end them. It also makes the "summer of quarantine" look less and less likely.
The key is that many journalists and reporters need to update their priors on this disease. To do other wise is "epistemic closure", as @drvox has written about.
We need more testing everywhere. It's the only way to get a grasp on the problem. But we need to accept that if COVID-19 Is multiples more widespread than believed than the entire calculus of costs/benefits change.
