Okay I’m BOILING. To anyone who wants me or others to “pray my depression away” here’s a reality check. Prayer doesn’t work that way. You don’t just pray a physical illness away, do you? NO. You go to a doctor and get treatment. Same exact thing is required for mental illness.
Even then, sometimes it doesn’t work. Sometimes treatment can give you a short period of relief, but then it’s back to business as usual. And because of this stupid culture of “get yourself out of your illness”, you feel guilty because apparently you didn’t work hard enough.
How do people have the AUDACITY to insert their opinions into the lives of those who are suffering? How do people STILL not know how much of a bulldozer mental illness can be? How do people not RESPECT those who speak on the subject? It makes me sicker than I already am.
So excuse the rant, but I’ve officially had it. Open a textbook or reputable website before you say “they say that prayer is the most effective cure for depression” because NOBODY WITH SENSE ACTUALLY SAYS THAT.
I’m not knocking prayer or religion in any way. Maybe it worked for you, and if it did, praise be to God. But yeah I’m going to be righteously indignant because I’ve been suffering since 5th grade (maybe earlier, I can’t remember). If prayer is the answer, why hasn’t it worked???
Don’t even try to tell me that a twitter rant isn’t an appropriate way to get my feelings out. Right now I am so tired and angry and sad and scared and overwhelmed and hopeless that I’m going to do whatever it takes to get some relief. If you don’t like it, feel free to unfollow.
Okay so the post that originally sparked my hostility was entirely well-meaning, and I was in the wrong, but the issue of people telling us to “pray it away” is still real! So I’m going to leave this thread up because my feelings towards that are valid.
