Question for old school Chicagoans: In your community, was it called Maxwell Street or "Jew Town?" Growing up, I thought everyone called it JT.
I didn't realize the problematic nature of this nickname until my 4th grade teacher scolded a classmate for referring to it as a "Jew Town Polish."
For those too young to remember, Maxwell Street was a sprawling open-air market where you could haggle for just about anything, from records and tapes to furniture to clothing and hubcaps. #FunFact: I still have the throwing star my grandfather bought there in the late 90s.
