So back in January I was doing inventory and noticed that it looked like I had some bales missing from a section away from our main farm. Couldn’t be certain, but looked like there were four indentions in the dirt. So I counted and didn’t think much more of it.
A few weeks later I came back and a couple rows were shorter than the rest. Definitely stolen. This went one for several more weeks. Bales would disappear a few at a time.
So in March I ordered a GPS tracker to find out who was doing it. I even picked out the bale I was going to stick it in because there was a pattern to how they were taken.
It took a few days for the tracker to arrive. I set it up and drove out to stick it in the chosen bale. It was GONE. That bale had disappeared.
So I stuck the tracker in another bale and every few days I would check my phone to see if it moved. Nothing. Until this morning...
I was piddling around the house this morning when I noticed an unread text on my phone. “Who texted me?” It was the GPS tracker saying it moved.
Threw on my clothes and called the sheriff. I had already given them the heads up back in March of what was going on and about the tracker. I met a deputy and we went to the tracker location
That bale was right where it said it was. Along with 4 more still intact and several being fed out.
I’m going to end the story there for now. I don’t want to comment on an “ongoing investigation”. But GPS tracker is @SpytecGPS and I rate it 6
out of 5.

Deputy goes to the house and knocks. No answer. I lost track of how many times he tried over the next hour, but no one is coming out. Two trucks are parked out front, but it is quiet inside.
I called Dad to bring a gooseneck with a loader so we can take these bales home. He was 30 miles away so it took awhile for him to get there.
After the Deputy couldn't get anyone to answer the Sherrif came and banged on the door. Still no luck. So he went to where she works and she wasn't around there.
Dad shows up. We load the hay and then I drive the tractor a few blocks away. It won't fit on the trailer with the hay so we'll have to come back for it. Dad gets in my pickup to follow me.
The pickup and trailer with hay are parked around the corner so from the house it looks like everyone left, but the Sherrif.
Not sure what exactly happened, but after we parked the tractor and came back the lady was out in the street talking to the Sherrif.
After they finish talking he comes over to give us the story. She doesn't know where the hay came from. Someone has been dropping off hay in the middle of the night, she didn't know who, and she thought they were doing her a favor.
I laughed out loud. Saying the hay fairy was helping her out for the past few months was not the excuse I was expecting.
Sherrif tells us he is going to check a few businesses security cameras to see if her pickup shows up on the route the bale took. (I didn't mention before, but her truck is a red Ford dually w/ a big sticker for her church in the back window and easily recognized.) We drive out.
I stopped by the farm where the hay was and see there are 4 missing bales. So I guess once the hay fairy saw she only had 1 bale left they brought her 4 more.
Later the Deputy calls to tell me her truck was seen going out and coming back between 1am and 4am. He is going to keep investigating and let me know what happens.
He calls again and asks if a guy named Adrian works for me. No, and I can't remember anyone named Adrian ever working out for me (not even seasonal).
He calls again and tells me she wants my phone number to call and pay for the hay. She claims she didn't do it, but is "taking responsibility". I agree to talk to her.
She calls me. Tells me the same story that someone else is involved, but won't say who, and asks if she can pay for the hay.
Told her the market price for the hay. Of course she doesn't have the money to pay now, but we agree she will pay me back over the next few weeks.
I'm still not sure where Adrian fits into all this, but it was her dually, her hay dolly, and her horses that took my hay. Maybe eventually we'll get the details, but that's all we know for now.
I need to add: the Sherrif's Office was great through this whole ordeal. I know they are overloaded with working a county with a larger land area than the state of Rhode Island with limited resources. Really appreciate how they handled this.
Some may say she is getting off easy, but here's the thing...Everyone in the community knows her, and now they all know what happened. This has to be very embarrassing to go through, and if anyone has any hay come up missing she will be the first suspected for a long while.
Oh also, there were a dozen horses in this lot. I don’t know much about addiction, but horses are worse than meth for some people.
