After a while, each time a monkey tried to climb the ladder the other monkeys would beat it up.
Eventually no monkey would climb the ladder through conditioned fear regardless of the temptation.

They then swapped one of the monkeys for a new monkey. The first thing the new monkey did was climb the ladder to get to the bananas & immediately the other monkeys beat him up.
After several beatings the new monkey learnt not to climb the ladder even though it didn’t know why.

The scientists then swapped out another original monkey for a new one & straight away they climbed the ladder. Again the other monkeys beat the new monkey up, including the first substitute monkey. A third monkey was swapped out & the same occurred.
Then a forth monkey was swapped & again the beating was repeated & finally the fifth monkey was replaced.
What was left in the cage now was a group of five monkeys that never received the cold shower punishment for climbing the ladder

I’m pretty sure that if you could ask the monkeys left in the cage why they beat up all who attempted to climb the ladder they’d tell you “we don’t know, that’s just how things are done around here”

We have been socially conditioned to “beat up” anything & anyone that goes against “what we’ve always done”
As a species we are still very much evolving & being able to think critically & creatively is a very big part of that evolutionary process.

Our whole entire system from education to the increased fear of welfare parents, drugs & crime, terrorists, immigrants is all designed to breed a standard citizenry that is easier to control.
