Seeing a lot of " @DnDBeyond should give us the books for free/discounted" going around. This is nonsense. I worked in publishing for 10 years. When we converted books into ebooks that were usable and clean, it took a team of over 10 people. I cannot imagine the work involved in..
converted an RPG rulebook/adventure into a dynamic system that integrates with a software platform. It's a tremendous effort and a great expense. The idea that this third party shouldn't be allowed to profit from the tremendous asset they've created is ludicrous. (cont)
Furthermore, far from just being PDF/ebook versions of sourcebooks, the toolset that @DnDBeyond has created is so exceptional my table cannot conceive of playing without it and...
if I'm being honest, the experience of playing with that toolset is probably the major deterrent against my playing other systems. For gods sake don't begrudge a third party for not giving you everything free. They have employees with families and health insurance too.
I'm borderline angry when I see people who want them to give this out free/deeply discounted because I don't want anything to prevent them staying profitable. I can't imagine play without @DnDBeyond and have no wish to return to that nightmare hellscape.
It cost my family nearly $30 just to see a 2 hour movie these days (something we may not be doing again for a long time!). Paying an extra $30 for months (or in the our experience of SKT- years!) of entertainment is nothing.
I played Basic and AD&D. So appreciate of @DnDBeyond and committed to their longevity that I just preordered Mythic Odysseys of Theros while writing this thread. If you don't want to use it, don't, but for gods sake quit begrudging the creative arts making a living!
