To keep my sanity in this Lockdown period I rented a kayak and I paddle for 2 to 3 hours every day behind VGC were I live.
I have learnt a lot about life from kayaking in last 7 days.
Lesson 1: Places always seem closer than they actually are. You keep paddling and never seem to get there. Be consistent and focused. Keep your eyes on the target.
Kayaking Lesson 2.
Confront the tide of you don’t want to capsize. Paddling your kayak into the tide is better than allow it hit you sideways. Confront those things in life you need to confront - avoiding them can make you topple over.
Kayaking Lesson 3:
Milestones keep you going. At sea it is difficult to know your progress. Use land based milestones - houses, jetties etc to encourage yourself that you are making some progress. Life without milestones to celebrate is frustrating.
Kayaking Lesson 4:
Good Method is better than great power. Sometimes I moved swifter by gently paddling the top of the water rather than heaving and digging my paddle - trying to cut deep into the water. Easy does it many times in life.
Kayaking Lesson 5:
If you stop paddling in high tide you may capsize. This is were the phrase “don’t rest on your oats” must have come from. In life keep paddling when the waves come at you. That is the wrong time to hands off.
Kayaking Lesson 6:
There is not a one size fits all approach to life. The tide is different each time you go out there - depending on the time of the day - high tide, low tide etc. Learn your environment daily and react accordingly.
Lesson 7: Set out time to rest and refresh. Do that with verve.
