2750km across Ontario, through Manitoba, and into Saskatchewan. Huge variation across communities in response to pandemic:
Sudbury gas station - every other pump in operation. Bathroom open but only 1 person at a time in the multi-stall room. Employee scanned by water as thought I wasn't about to drink out of the top she just wrapped her hand around.
Thunder Bay gas station - no precautions in place. And hotel was operating as normal except there was plastic at the reception desk to protect the front desk staff.
Dryden grocery store - hand sanitizer for public use everywhere. Lots of staff but little food. Plastic to protect cashier.
Kenora gas station - no precaution. Bathroom free-for-all.
Manitoba border - mandatory stop. Cheery officer using a garbage grabber to hand me a COVID-19 pamphlet. And express disbelief that I would be driving "all the way to SaskatchewAN."
Rural Manitoba co-op has bar - made us stay in car while they pumped gas. One of us was allowed inside to pay with a credit card tap.
Yorkton, SK grocery store - lots of food, lots of people, and felt like the "new normal" of shopping that I was used to in Mississauga.
So far, no one has thrown eggs at our house despite having Ontario license plates. We came from a province with 500+ cases a day to a province with 1 new case yesterday. We expect people to not exactly be welcoming. Yet, Saskies are just so friendly. It is so nice to be home.
