I don't buy into prevailing pessimism on NYC, not at all. But today let's concentrate on traffic and streets, which underline @NYCMayor 's lack of creativity and the unwillingness of a liberal city council to truly drive change.
The Streets are a menace, raceways even as the vast majority of NYers try to abide by social distancing and so need to step into those streets. And let's not blame the police, who are overwhelmed with sickness. This morning I saw two near crashes, as cars going 15 to 20 mph over
the speed limit nearly killed pedestrians on Ditmas Avenue. The solution requires commonsense. Do what other cities, from Oakland to Denver have done and close off one-third or half the streets to traffic and set a 10 mph speed limit on others. And continue to prioritize buses
Yet the @NYCMayor obdurately refuses to act and his Transportation arm, often a font of creativity, @NYC_DOT , has fallen into silence. Similarly, the @NYCCouncil needs to stop talking of acting bravely and get on with it. Challenge the Mayor, @bradlander . Make streets safe for
distancing. Much good thinking on this from David Roberts @drvox and @StreetsblogNYC and others. We are entering a challenging period in NYC and what's a bit scary is that even this, the low hanging fruit of creativity, appears beyond the administration now
