There's this idea that white (Christian) America doesn't have a culture of it's own - but of course it does. Is just that white (Christian) Americans insist their culture isn't distinct, it's just "normal". It's invisibility by ubiquity. https://twitter.com/JustSayXtian/status/1252377701781958661
White (Christian) American ethnic dress? Blue jeans and t-shirts. Baseball caps, cowboy hats, trucker hats. Skinny jeans. Sundresses, leggings, yoga pants.
Are some of those things shared in other cultures? Sure. Have styles changed over time? Yes, of course. They still exist.
White (Christian) American ethic foods? Hamburgers and hot dogs. Corn on the cob. Pizza. Spaghetti and meatballs. BBQ. Buffalo wings. Steak and potatoes. Fried chicken. Are some of those things shared? Were some influenced by other cultures? Yup. Welcome to every culture ever.
White (Christian) ethnic holidays and festival foods? Easter ham. Turkey and mashed potatoes and cranberry sauce on Thanksgiving. Egg nog and Christmas cookies at Christmas. Hot dogs and corn on the cob on the 4th of July. Do some people have variations? You betcha. So what?
The language of white (Christian) American culture? English, obvs. But American English, not British English or Australian English or even Canadian English. With several regional accents. Are other languages also spoken by white Christian Americans? Yep. Ethnicities can overlap.
The push for assimilation isn't an amorphous insistance on giving up another culture and adopting a formless, undefinable, indistinct "normal". It's an insistance on adopting specifically, definably white (Christian) American culture. Which is no more 'normal' than any other.
