Thinking a lot lately about critical affective literacy (CAL) and the need books are filling right now for emotion and connection. Esp. for our students who are out of schools, away from friends, living a life so outside of their norm.
Some of the research I didn’t get to present on this spring looks at the ways that Ahmed’s (2010, 2015) theories of affect can illuminate the relationship between a person and a book — that transactional reading experience.
I look at books as objects “sticky” with affect, and at the importance of a book’s “conditions of arrival”, ie the sociocultural and personal context of its reading.
This exploration of books, reading, and affect helps me understand other concepts such as thinking of books as tools and signs (Vygotsky, 1978) and how they become sliding glass doors (Bishop, 1990).
Keeping my fingers crossed 🤞🏼that I’ll be able to share more in person at #NCTE2020
