In Nov 2019 I had an opportunity to travel to Japan & certain things about their country left a lasting impact.

A short thread below on how their culture sees design, UX, obsessions with cleanliness and attention to details in daily life.
The first thing you will notice is these vending machines at every corner for almost everything you need daily. Self service is part of culture. (Now wonder impact of Covid-19 on this)
How many time’s have you come out of your hot shower & used the towels to wipe the mirror? Taken care here automatically by the hotel. Attention to small things that matter.
Every bus has this small seat that opens in the aisle for quick short discussions & avoid risks of falling while you try to talk in a moving bus (not very clear from this picture :/)
You need to keep footwear outside at most places & here (on a higher floor) they have ensured nets to protect accidental shoes falls
When you are running to board a train, you may miss visual cues but this melody makes it super easy to know when the doors will close.
Every pedestrian signal has loud audio jingle (for the blind), & instead timers these small disappearing bars which I feel create lesser anxiety while crossing.
This country takes special pride in being clean. Across the nation, even the narrowest of streets didn’t have a single piece of paper or waste. Interesting trivia is Japanese spend avg 30min daily for bathing!
In a country that hardly speaks or understands English, we rarely had to ask for any help. Everything is marked bold & clear. I am sure the Olympics helped speed this up.
If there is one country where i think social distancing & order will work “voluntarily” it is japan. This pic highlights every escalator even during peak hours. Those in hurry can walk past else everybody gets in line. Zero chaos.
And finally you can’t talk about this country without understanding the importance of punctuality. As they say you can set your clock based on trains arrivals. It is common for people to say will see you in 13mins.

One country would love to visit again!
