Being locked up for 6 years gave me a cultural disconnect from my peers. Things/songs/generational moments they had in their early to mid 20s i only (at best) read about. And that's a time period people like to reminisce about so 🤷🏾‍♂️
That's an observation not a complaint.
I just thought about it because, Biggie's ENTIRE run happened while i was locked up. (So did the best part of Wu-Tang's run. So while i am fully aware of their impact on the culture, and I'm old enough to have experienced it...i didn't.
That's what prison does. It freezes time. Creates a separate reality for the incarcerated. It exacerbates the disconnect between the formerly incarcerated and their peers. The gap can't be bridged. I now realize that in my 30s i had a lot of friends who were 5-8 years younger.
And it might have been because that's where i was culturally, if not emotionally. I'll discuss with a professional soon and not get back with you.

I hope i bring humanity to what incarceration looks like. When you think ex-felon, do you picture a threat or a human who is redeemable? I've said several times that I'm not looking for redemption. But that's not true. I don't EXPECT it. But i want to feel it. For myself.
That part about the world changing lol. Imagine going to prison when pagers were just for doctors and dope boys and coming home to the internet and chat rooms and cell phones. The dotcom bubble was in full swing when i came home and home computers weren't even normal when i left
Things change so fast technologically that a person who was locked up in 2006 and came home in 2012...left with no iPhone and came home to an iPhone 4s or 5 being common.
I'd like to reiterate here that this isn't a complaint, just an observation.

In spite of prison, my life is exceptionally dope. My family is gorgeous and brilliant and loving. I'm on a damn network tv show (tune in to @ForLife_ABC tonight!) If this was as good as it got? Cool.
