4 & a half years worth of Roman brooches. All but 3 of these have come from the same farm. The farm that was once the site of a Roman Villa. I once asked my FLO how she thought so many could have been lost & whether the smaller variety would have belonged to children...
...she told me that these brooches were the Roman equivalent of safety pins & several would’ve been worn at the same time by any one person. From time to time, they would become detached & fall to the ground. Because the wearer wore so many, they were usually unaware...
..with regards to the smaller type of brooch, my FLO said that although they may have been used by children, they wouldn’t have been made solely for that purpose. Smaller brooches were also used by adults alike. I suppose it depends what garment they were used to fasten
