This short 2-page story was the first MTG narrative ever printed

Written by Richard Garfield, it appears in the Alpha edition rulebook

It establishes what games of Magic represent thematically—telling of the moments before a battle between 2 planeswalkers, Worzel & Thomil

There is rules-lore in the story too:

»Worzel is a Green mage & had "coerced" White spells from a white mage violently. This thematically explains the old ante rule

»Worzel had White magic but she couldn't connect to the Plains & can't use it—narratively explaining mana-screw⬇️

There are also a number of cards from Alpha that are referenced in the story:

"brigade of firebreathers" - Firebreathing
"taken to raising serpents" - Sea Serpent
"Glasses of Urza" - well...
"legions of undead" - Dredge Skeletons (? -could be a few different cards though)
