I guess I always believed that as I improved, my style would just... emerge. Unbidden and glorious. I& #39;d know just how I want my art to look forever more.
Didn& #39;t happen :& #39;)
I think style is more to do with who we are *outside* our work...

I don& #39;t settle in any one style because I just LOVE variety. In every aspect of life, I like to shake things up as much as possible. I love change. So why would I think I& #39;d be happy just painting one way for the rest of time when there are so many gorgeous styles to explore?
Style, I think, is one part the skills we have to work with and another part the decisions we make about how to use them.
Some people like one thing very clearly and stick with it. Some of us like moving between things, trying them on for size and moving onto the next one.

I don& #39;t think style is an unavoidable extension of our hands so much as the expressions of the things we enjoy most (in this case, the way we enjoy working combined with the things we love seeing). So, if what we enjoy is variety, that feeling of "style" might elude us.
Arriving at a style is like a pilgrimage for us artists so this so might sound a little sad, but I don& #39;t think it should be. For one, I attribute the speed with which I learned (and am still learning) to my constant experimentation and refusal to settle for just one style.
Overall, skill is much more important to focus on, I think.
Style is just the decisions you make. Skill sets you up to make better decisions. Your style will appear with much more grace and confidence when the skills informing it are sharp.
