Why Men Struggle to Go Vegan & What You Can Do (THREAD)

1. Going Vegan Looks Weak

We think veganism is for "wimps" "liberals" "sensitive types" & "snowflakes". Guys that go vegan must have been brainwashed by their GF or wife. Men don't just develop compassion & integrity.
2. Exclusion

We fear being ostracized by our peers. Being "one of the lads" is deeply important to us. Even if we accept that the killing of animals is cruel & we love our dogs, if we go vegan "what will my friends think?!"
3. Conflation of Masculinity and Meat

Meat = Macho
Meat = Protein
Meat = Food of "Real" men

Even if I develop heart disease, have a heart attack, and develop erectile dysfunction, it's still more "manly" than being a vegan.
4. Men are Cowards

We would rather live in a fantasy world of ignorance than be accountable for our shit. We see this time and time again in our relationships, parenting, health, sex life, and careers.
5. Men are Self-Righteous

We already know everything about the world. If anyone comes along with an idea that changes our pre-existing ideas about the world, we are quick to dismiss them without doing any research of our own "must be one of those loony lefties"
6. Men are Lazy

The idea of changing our habits and behaviours sounds like a nightmare to most of us. Many of us hate change, especially when we're influenced to change by others (especially women or those younger than us). It needs to be our decision.
7. Most Men are Misogynists

Not all of us intend to be, but most of us are. The idea of things like "salad" "tofu" and "bean burgers" sound far too "feminine" and "girly". Things that are girly are "weak" and not for men.
8. Men Are Fussy AF

We are creatures of habit. Usually, these habits are learned from our fathers. Therefore, we do things like dad did and like his dad did. "My dad used to eat two steaks and four eggs for breakfast"...but heart disease also "runs in the family".
9. Men are Fragile

We hate to be told that we're doing something wrong. We're always right. Anyone that says otherwise is a "hater" or an "idiot". We always know best and if you point out our issues we'll destroy you.
10. Health is for Losers

We like to be overweight, struggling with gut issues and being at risk of unnecessary health issues. It makes us big strong men. But we admire and obsess over ultra-healthy men on TV playing for our favourite team.
So, how can we get more men to adopt veganism?

1. Don't Tell Us

Slowly introduce vegan foods into our lives. We won't even notice and we'll probably really enjoy it. We'll then run out to our other mates and say "that Beyond Burger isn't that bad ya know".
2. Make it Seem "Manly"

"That Impossible Burger looks like a beast"

"That @NimaiDelgado is a unit"

"Did you know vegans have higher levels of testosterone?"

"Ancient Gladiators of Rome were fueled on beans"
3. Challenge Us

"22 days vegan? I could do that, no problem". Some of us need a challenge, it gets us all competitive and pumped up. "Veganuary? Sounds like BS but I'll give it a go"
4. Show Us

"Have you seen Tom recently? He went vegan 6 months ago, he's lost 10kg and looks younger and healthier now at 30 than when he was at 20".
5. Don't Tell Us, Question Us

We hate being told what to do and that we're wrong or "immoral". Fuck off with that stuff. Ask us why we eat meat, why do we think it's masculine, why we think the food is boring, "have you ever tried vegan food?"

Get us thinking.
6. Give Us the Facts

We hate fluff, especially whiny young people telling us to "love animals". Whatever, tell us some facts about veganism. Drop some knowledge on us. Tell us in person, not over a text or on Twitter. Show us, you've looked into this.
7. Give Us Some Evidence

Surely, you can't live on a vegan diet forever? We'll die of malnutrition, we've been eating meat for 1000's years, it's natural and just what we do. "Did you know Joaquin Phoenix has been vegan for 40+ years?"...."The guy that played Joker? Seriously?"
8. Support Us

Don't leave us to figure out for ourselves. Help a mate out. Tell me how it works, what do you eat?, where do you buy the food?, got any recipes? What's the best plant milk? Help a brother out.
9. Tell Us "Why?"

Why should we go vegan? What's it all about? What made you go vegan? What benefits have you noticed? What this all this stuff about factory farming? Why is meat bad for the planet? Help us out here, what you doing all this for?
10. Don't Shame Us

The vast majority of us don't take kindly to being called a "murderer", "rapist", "animal abuser", or "knuckle-dragging meat-eating scumbag". Some might take to it but most of us will tell you to "fuck right off" and throw out the whole idea completely.
