What are social emotions for? Great stuff from @dsznycer & @SpeciesTypical https://doi.org/10.1016/j.evolhumbehav.2019.05.002

GRATITUDE is triggered by unexpected cooperation, and motivates higher cooperation in return (which can lead to a virtuous circle of escalating concern).
GUILT is triggered when you treat others worse than they would expect; it motivates you to repair the relationship by ceasing to impose costs on, and increasing the delivery of benefits to, the victim.
ANGER is triggered when others treat you worse than you expect; it motivates you to 'bargain' for better treatment by threatening to impose costs or stop delivering benefits.
PRIDE is triggered when you possess socially valued traits, and perform behaviours, that demonstrate your power to deliver benefits, or impose costs, on others. Pride motivates you to advertise these traits, and to dominate subordinates who do not possess them.
SHAME is triggered when you DO NOT exhibit socially valued traits and behaviours (or you exhibit disvalued traits), and cannot deliver benefits, or impose costs, on others. Shame motivates you to CONCEAL this information, and submit to dominant individuals (who do exhibit them).
SADNESS is triggered by the loss (through separation, incapacitation, or death) of valued others who value you. Sadness motivates you to think about what caused the loss, to avoid behaviours that may have caused it, and to think about how to mitigate, cope with or adapt to it.
