While we know bereavement in of itself is isolating. Many ppl rn are grieving (w/o choice) publically, not collectively. Collective grief has a connective function, it reduces isolation. Public grief can simulate connection then heighten experiences of isolation.1/3 #Griefwork
We need grief & bereavement work to be anti-racist & anti-oppressive to address root causes of multiple and disproportionate losses poc experience, COVID19 or not, but also the way w/o adequate support it can place our communities disproportionately in trauma & 'non-recovery' 3/3
Spiritual rituals & non-eurocentric traditions offer us collectivising grief as humanising. Public grief makes us spectators in the loss & can feed exceptionalism based on whose pain is most platformed, palatable & audible. We need griefwork as part of our public strategy now 2/3
