You will be SHOCKED to learn that last week to spoke to @TheDrum about What Animal Crossing Means for Brands™.

The main question is:

Given how much GAMING is a HOT THING, will brands turn up in Animal Crossing?

The answer is twofold.

[mini thread]
The first response is (and this is covered in the article):

BRANDS ARE ALREADY IN ANIMAL CROSSING.

(unofficially)

Here are some examples:
Basically, if you've got a pattern/brand/logo - you can get it IN-GAME, on clothes or paintings (we'll come back to this) really easily using the in-game pattern designer that unlocks pretty early on in the island experience.

Even Twitter did some too. https://twitter.com/TwitterGaming/status/1250499154054270976
Finally, it's not just brand logos and fashion designs finding their way on to your Animal Crossing Island.

As @Matt_Muir pointed out the other week, Getty has, using the same tool above, made an ART GENERATOR.

This is gorgeous and amazing. https://twitter.com/Matt_Muir/status/1252214991870201856
OK, so that's part one.

That is How Brands Can Be In Animal Crossing RIGHT NOW.

Part two is a bit longer/weirder.

Per the article at the top...
Animal Crossing is Nintendo First Party Game. Which means it won't appear on PlayStation anytime soon/ever.

Think of it like Mario.

Brand partnership/placements are VERY VERY rare for Nintendo but not unheard of and nearly always just plain weird.

Let's go 👇🏻
Nintendo First Party (and equally wholesome) game, PIKMIN had this wonderful piece of product placement from Duracell.

Weird. Thoughtful. Rare. Hilarious.

Also, different by region - https://tcrf.net/Pikmin_2/Version_Differences
Nintendo First Party (and instantly recognisable) game, MARIO KART, then went and did this - questionable? - partnership with Mercedes.

'That Merc gives me Vietnam flashbacks' - a game, just now.
The Mercedes x Mario partnership/placement didn't stop there (no, I still don't get it either).

It then turned up in Mario Maker.
Games featuring brands and products is not uncommon (see attached).

But for Nintendo, it tends to happen less - and rarely does it ever make sense. Ahem.
You could argue that brand partnerships for Nintendo games only tend to happen when the firm is struggling financially.

But the Nintendo Switch is performing better than ever and Animal Crossing is one of Nintendo's most successful launches ever. https://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2020-03-22-is-animal-crossing-one-of-nintendo-switchs-most-successful-launches-ever
SO WHAT DOES THAT MEAN FOR BRANDS?

1. If you've got a logo/brand/rabid fanbase you want to engage, then using the in-game design app to put an image in-game is an option.

2. If you're a big/recognisable brand, with money to spend, and an audience to pursue, speak to Nintendo.
FREE IDEA TIME.

1. IKEA could launch a range of furniture available to buy from the Nook family (or better yet, make them 'DIY recipes' so you actually have to make them).

2. STARBUCKS could sponsor the rumoured coffee shop arriving in-game at some point this year.
3. Fashion brands could speak to Nintendo about getting licenced outfits available in-game (although something would have to be done to stop them being re-made).
4. AC lives on the real-world calendar. So featuring as part of a timed-events/holiday sponsorship might be a thing. We've just had AC's version of Easter (Bunny Day), Earth Day is next... after that?
I have no knowledge of how Nintendo works. HOWEVER smart money would be on there being a shopping list of in-game products/events etc that - for a price - could be easily adjusted.

It's how Fortnite brings in the extra big bucks.

Why wouldn't Nintendo want some of that?

End.
PS. Yes, of course, I have the game, see here -

Oh and add me if you want (but tell me you're adding me so I know who to accept!)
