i feel like i need to make a thread on how callouts work because people don’t really seem to understand what they are for or how to do them (not like there are lessons) and a lot can go wrong because of that
callouts are used in our communities in order to alert vulnerable people to dangerous individuals so they can avoid them, these are not to be used for personal reasons and there are a few checks you need to go through before publishing one
simply calling someone out without doing these things leads to callouts being taken less seriously in many groups and communities and as a result ends up putting the vulnerable people they are supposed to help protect at risk
if you see someone acting in a way that could be defined as prejudiced (eg. transphobic, aphobic, etc.) the first thing you need to do is something called “calling in” - this is where you speak to the person privately to alert them to these biases
and to ask for clarification or context to avoid misunderstanding
often times if the information you have found or been given is old the person may have likely moved on and grown and there is no need to call in further - good news for everyone
calling in is an important, but less apparent technique for the general movement of forward progress as you *will* have more people on “the side of good” or whatever you’d like to label it and it can prevent hurting people who may be well meaning
often times vulnerable people can internalise biases due to certain movements seeking to prey on them specifically, obviously some mindsets are more dangerous than others but generally you will find most people can be swayed with a bit of understanding
when it comes to more dangerous accusations you will need to gather evidence or accounts of this happening, again this helps keep the general concept of callouts legitimate, and be sure to provide an external link with appropriate tags when this contains triggering content
it is also important to gather as much information as you possibly can *beforehand* in order to provide a concise account of what’s happened - obviously you may not find everything but the clearer you make your case the easier it is for people to understand
never create a callout as you go, sort of like a “livetweet” style of doing things, as there will normally be misinformation floating about - once you put this information into the world it’s out there and deleting it will not stop that (this is part of why we call in as well)
i also really wouldn’t recommend minors participate in creating callouts due to the nature of most content and i would never recommend confronting a dangerous individual **especially** if you are a minor, if you need help please ask an adult you trust
when it comes to callouts by association, eg. going after friends or associates of an individual, it is *VITAL* that you contact them before doing *ANYTHING* - you never know who may be a victim and publicly pulling them into things could potentially put them in danger
that’s about what i know on the topic but if you have anything to add feel free to do so https://abs.twimg.com/emoji/v2/... draggable="false" alt="🙏" title="Folded hands" aria-label="Emoji: Folded hands">
